What the rating documents
Aaron Resnick holds the Martindale-Hubbell AV Preeminent rating, the highest rating the service issues.
Martindale-Hubbell has rated attorneys since the nineteenth century, and the rating is built entirely from confidential peer review. Lawyers and judges who have worked with or against the attorney evaluate two things independently: legal ability, scored on a five point scale, and adherence to professional standards of conduct, ethics, reliability, and diligence. AV Preeminent is issued only when the legal ability score reaches the top band and the ethical standards review is affirmative.
The two components are separate for a reason. A lawyer can be effective and not be ethical. The AV designation requires both, and the ethical component is a threshold rather than a score, meaning it cannot be offset by ability.
Why a peer rating carries different weight
Most legal recognition rewards visibility. A peer review rating rewards something a client cannot easily observe from outside: what opposing counsel and judges say about you when the evaluation is confidential and there is no reason to be generous.
That is the useful part for a business owner choosing litigation counsel. In a contested matter, the other side's lawyer forms a view of your attorney within the first few exchanges, and that view shapes how the dispute proceeds, what gets tested, and what gets settled. AV Preeminent is a record of what those lawyers concluded.
